Farmers’ Market Returns to Campus Square
February 19th, 2008The 2008 Bethlehem Farmers’ Market will run Thursdays from 12-5pm at Campus Square. The first day of the market is June 19, with a formal Grand Opening Celebration on June 26.
For the seventh year in a row, the Bethlehem Farmers’ Market will have goods available to Bethlehem residents at Campus Square. The market will run at the intersection of New and Morton Streets on Thursdays, June through September, from noon to 5 pm. A soft opening of the market will be on June 19, and a larger grand opening will occur the following week.
The grand opening celebration will take place at noon on June 26 with live music and remarks from Tony Hanna, the city of Bethlehem’s Director of community and economic development. He will be joined by speaker Peggy Plympton, VP for finance and administration and co-chair of LEAG (Lehigh Environmental Advisory Group).
This year, the market will have vendors selling a vast assortment of goods including fresh produce, salsa, dips, pet treats, herbs, baked goods, and soaps. Additionally, the Market Manager, Lindsay Fekula, has planned some special events and entertainment for patrons during the market hours. “Now that it is Lehigh’s second year running the market, we know what to expect and what we can do to improve it for customers and vendors,” she says. Lindsay will be at the market each day to help the vendors with set up and the customers with questions.
The 2008 market was awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Farmers’ Market Development Program. The grant enabled Lehigh to increase advertising and publicity for the market. “We anticipate this year to be extremely successful,” says Lindsay. “Last year, our vendors requested increased marketing and advertising and the grant allowed us to do just that.”
The market provides a unique shopping opportunity unequal to what customers typically find at a grocery store. At the Bethlehem Farmers’ Market, customers can sample the goods, develop relationships with the vendors, learn about unique food varieties and cooking tips, and greet their neighbors.
The market supports local farming and businesses in the Lehigh Valley and is part of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture’s Buy Fresh Buy Local program.
In late August 2002, The Cup, also known as the Bethlehem Dairy Store, opened its second location in the Campus Square retail area. The original Bethlehem Dairy Store on Linden Street in North Bethlehem has been a favorite of area families looking to enjoy many flavors of homemade ice cream for over 85 years.
