Opening Day of the 2011 Bethlehem Farmers’ Market

May 20th, 2011

Despite the threat of rain, Opening Day of the Bethlehem Farmers’ Market was bright, sunny and bustling!  Market-goers were thrilled with the reusable grocery bag giveaways and the great “Local Foods Guide” provided by Buy Fresh Buy Local of the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Twelve vendors were present at the Opening Day, including new vendors Key Ingredient Market (spreads and dips), York Moor Farms (fresh eggs and produce), Casa Vieja (lunch items including tacos and guacamole) and Around the World in 80 Cakes (cupcakes and brownies).  Returning vendors were Easton Salsa Co. (salsa and hot sauce), The Popcorn Pit (fresh popped corn and nuts), A Natural Alternative (soaps and toiletries), Back Door Bakeshop (baked goods), Hum-dinger Alpapcas (wool products), Tasty Pastry (kiffles and nut rolls), Quetzal Bakery (Guatemalan baked goods) and Bechdolt Orchards (produce and flowers).  Next week two more returning vendors will join, Lettuce Alone Farm (produce) and The Flour Shop (breads, lunch items).

Dave Fry entertained the crowd from 12-2pm with an eclectic mix of music, including a special children’s set for the students of Holy Infancy in South Bethlehem, who walked to the market as a fieldtrip. The Bethlehem Farmers’ Market runs Thursdays from 11am to 3pm through October 27, 2011 at Campus Square (New & Morton Streets in South Bethlehem).  For photos from the day, please visit www.facebook.com/campussquare.

2010 Farmers’ Market Starting this June

April 9th, 2010

The 2010 Bethlehem Farmers’ Market, which supports local farms and businesses, will run from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays at Campus Square.

For the eighth year in a row, the Bethlehem Farmers’ Market will have goods available to Bethlehem residents at Campus Square. The market will run at the intersection of New and Morton Streets on Thursdays, June 17 through September 23, from noon to 4 p.m.

The market is still accepting vendor applications for cheeses, soaps, and prepared foods, but vendors must meet the Buy Fresh Buy Local standards available at campussquare.net.Additionally, the Farmers’ Market has a new manager. International Gifts Festival Sale

November 21st, 2009

The Lehigh Microfinance Club Ten Thousand Villages Festival Sale will support the efforts of artisans around the world by selling their handmade gifts, home decor, jewelry and personal accessories. The event, which will be held on December 1st through the 4th from 9:00am until 6:00 pm at the Lehigh University Bookstore, offers a unique opportunity for people in the Bethlehem community to invest in their world by shopping fair trade.  Shoppers will also learn more about skilled artisans in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

“For more than 60 years Ten Thousand Villages has worked with talented artisans around the world providing vital, fair income in exchange for their beautiful handcrafted items,” sale organizer Mary Popp said.  “By holding this sale of handpainted ceramics, intricately woven basketry and handmade jewelry, we give people in Bethlehem, PA community a chance to help create employment opportunities for people around the world.”

The Lehigh Microfinance Club has hosted a festival this past year, showcasing an exquisite collection of handcrafted items from Ten Thousand Villages.

Ten Thousand Villages is a fair trade retailer of artisan-crafted home decor, personal accessories and gift items from across the globe. Featuring products from more than 130 artisan groups in some 38 countries, we are part of a network of more than 155 retail outlets throughout the United States selling Ten Thousand Villages products. For more than 60 years, Ten Thousand Villages has been establishing long-term buying relationships in places where skilled artisans lack opportunities for stable income. Luminaria Night Comes to Campus Square

December 16th, 2008

Campus Square was one of the participating venues for New Bethany Ministries’ Luminaria Night on December 13, 2008. For the eleventh year in a row, Luminaries lined the streets throughout Bethlehem’s neighborhoods and shopping districts.

All proceeds from the event benefited New Bethany Ministries, a Faith-Based Agency that provides care and services to poor, homeless, hungry and mentally ill people in the Lehigh Valley. Last year, the project raised $34,000 by lighting almost 2,300 homes and businesses.

Thank you to Lehigh’s Office of Community and Regional Affairs, and several student volunteers for creating the lovely display at Campus Square!
